Speak Up!
Are you afraid of
reporting those violators of the English Drive? Are you scared that they will
call you “trying hard” or “th”? Are you scared because of peer pressure?
Sabotaging is one of the most pressing problems in implementing the English
Drive. The term is used to refer to a group of people who are speaking in the
vernacular. Many people didn’t bother reporting these people out of fear for
revenge or they just want to stay out of trouble. Other reasons would be that
they are friends. Let me ask you, are you helping those violators by keeping
silent? Were they asked to speak in the vernacular where for in fact that it
wasn’t allowed since the English Drive is still functioning? No. You are not
helping them and you are neither helping the school in continuing its legacy
when it comes to the English drive that school is known for. You are not
helping them for the fact they were sent there to learn quality Education and
in the sense that they could improve their English communication skills which
is very helpful in the future. Where is the quality education then? Some parents
sent their young ones to this school because of its English Drive. Let me ask
those who like to disobey the rules, what did you get? Demerits? Getting kicked
out of school for reaching a certain level that school cannot tolerate it
anymore? The satisfaction of being an outlaw? Did you ever consider those
people who helped you to enrolled in this school that the others envied? Please
don’t let the English Drive Policy that the school is best known for die. Don’t
be afraid to report. Also, please avoid sabotaging and speaking in the
vernacular. You can get nothing good from it besides having demerits. For those
who will report, remember that HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY. Make sure to report
honest reports. Remember, God is watching!
Saint Louis College-Cebu and the English Drive
Saint Louis
College-Cebu is a school known for producing
graduates who could speak good English and or that very
reason, they got their jobs easily where speaking English is a
main requirement. Why do you think so? This catholic
institution has its special policy called the English drive.
English drive is a policy where students are required to speak
in English or else they would be given the chip or the will be
reported or caught. English Drive is mandatory inside the
school premises at a specific time. Lousians look at their
students’ handbook as their guide towards the rules and
regulations to follow. The rules must be strictly followed by
the students so as not to get lots of demerits or if they are
unlucky enough, they would be expelled if they reached level
10 in the English Drive. There are times when English Drive
is on moratorium meaning that the students could speak in
vernacular. Sometimes it would be announced on the speaker
but you mostly need to rely on your handbook for more
clarifications. English Drive is not just about demerits this
and demerits that. If a student submits three reports to the
English monitor or the English teacher, they would get one
merit. Don’t feel tortured if you are required to speak English
for the rest of your stay in this institution it is because it will
all be worth it by graduation because you will receive the
Anglophone Award but, you must not have any demerits and
you must swear that you didn’t speak any dialect during your
stay in this institution. For those English monitors and
special monitors, work hard and you will receive a certificate
of appreciation (English Monitor) and a certificate of
Recognition (Special Monitor). To every Louisian out there,
try your best to follow the policies of the English drive
because by the end of your senior High School year, you will
see its benefits.

English and Us
English is the most widely used conversational language throughout the world. Almost everywhere we hear some people speaking in English in order to communicate with one another. International companies also required that the people they employed knew how to speak English and because of this, all schools from different parts of the globe have English as one of their major subjects and therefore has been a part of the curriculum. Even though they have English as one of their subjects to be studied by the students, most of the schools, both in private and public are just up to the subject thus, making their mother tongues as their medium of conversation. There are also schools which required their students which required their students to speak in English such as international schools, Montessori schools, and some private and public schools because they have students who came from abroad. Speaking English gives one an edge towards communication, especially if he plans to go out of the country, tour the world or look for a job abroad since English is widely used. It also gives one an edge when applying for a job at a big company since most companies wants an employee who could speak and understand in English since most of their workers came from different countries. No matter what country you came from, if you could speak English, you could connect yourself with other people who could also speak language. Whoops. Don’t just stop at being able to speak English. Practice and harness the skill by reading good books and articles, watching and improving your grammar and your choice of words. Be a good speaker that would be able to express him/herself more. Learn it so that when talking with others, you could minimize misunderstandings. Connect yourself with the world through speaking English fluently that could also inspire others to be acquainted with the language more.
